Placement: LBNL - Improving Conversion of Renewable Electricity to Bioproducts
Berkeley, California

Kushaan is a rising third year Chemical Engineering major in UC Berkeley’s College of Chemistry. He is passionate about green technologies, carbon capture and storage, water purification, and alternative renewable fuel sources. On campus, he is a research team lead for the Biofuels Technology Club, a student organization that turns waste cooking oil from campus dining halls into biodiesel. This summer, he is interning with Dr. Eric Sundstrom of LBNL’s ABPDU, working to convert surplus renewable energy into bioproducts and fuels. In his free time, he enjoys reading, exploring the outdoors, running, cooking, and playing sports, especially basketball and soccer.

Though my internship is officially over, I am continuing to work on this project for the next week or so to collect my final data. The model has advanced greatly since my first tests in SuperPro.

Blog #3

The pace of my work the past two weeks has picked up greatly, and I have made a lot of progress on my model! I have completed the seed train, electrolyzer, and airlift reactors and started to learn how to do economic modelling within SuperPro.

The past two weeks working at the ABPDU have been pretty busy. I have continued working on the SuperPro model for the reactor setup and going to meetings. The first major meeting I had was with the project team, which consisted of my mentor, ABPDU scientists, and an LCA specialist at LBNL.
